Greenville County Schools Food and Nutrition Services

Grant Amount: $100,000

To provide culinary and nutrition training to Greenville County School Department (GCSD) cafeteria staff during the summers of 2013 and 2014. Staff from cafeterias where new, healthy choice menus have not yet been implemented will learn to prepare them.

For 91% funding of materials for the school's first-ever library, to be housed in the school's new building which will open in 2013.

Project HOPE Foundation

For 20% funding of a pilot program called Ready to Learn-Ready to Teach that will prepare autistic children ages 3-11 to succeed in the regular classroom through a highly effective treatment known as Applied Behavior Analysis or ABA, and will also train educators to teach these children successfully.

For 18% funding that will enable the organization to enhance crisis intervention services by incorporating a TextTEENline service component. These intervention services will target all middle school and high school students in Greenville County.

Legacy Charter School

For 43% funding of the Lion's Club After-School Program, a critical component in improving poor academic performance and behavior issues for at-risk students. The program, offered at no charge to families, will focus on three key needs: academic excellence, character education, and physical fitness/health.

Julie Valentine Center

Grant Amount: $46,777

For 100% funding, over two years, of a Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma prevention program that will support implementation of the "Period of Purple Crying" Program for families of babies delivered at GHS Children's Hospital; the aim of the program is to have maternity nurses educate parents on the subject of normal early infant crying. The grant will also be applied towards the purchase of specialized medical equipment that will enable the two GHS pediatricians who perform medical evaluations on children at the Julie Valentine Center to document abusive head trauma.
